What are microgames

Microgames are games made of tiny tasks, each one told in a single big word and over in a few seconds. A word such as STACK!, SWAB! or MILK! fills the screen, a little hand shows the move it wants, a tap, a hold, a drag, a swipe, a rub, a circle or a burst of quick taps, and a fuse burns down along the top. Do the job before the fuse runs out and the next one is already on its way. Get it wrong and the scene ends in a harmless cartoon mess, a spilt coffee or a soaked parrot, and you lose one of three lives.

Every run is endless and goes on until the third life is gone. About every five rounds a sign such as FASTER! or HOTTER! turns the pace up, until it runs at roughly twice the start, and every tenth round or so brings a bigger boss task: a kraken to tickle, a final exam, a rush hour in the kitchen or the school bus to catch. Clear it and a lost life comes back, and most boss rounds bring a new rank as well. Your best run is saved in the browser on your device, and each game keeps a practice list of every task you have met, so you can try a tricky one on its own.

Ten worlds of tiny jobs

Each of the ten games puts the same quick rhythm in a world of its own. Oops Inc. is an office tower ridden floor by floor in a lift, with 24 office jobs from stacking crates to pouring coffee and a nap at the desk. Rocket Rookie sends a new cadet through space missions where nothing ever quite stops drifting, Deck Hands keeps one round green parrot busy on a leaky pirate ship that never stops rolling, and Spell Panic is a night of lessons at a magic school, with a FINAL EXAM every eighth spell.

Soup's Up runs a restaurant kitchen through a busy service, Hectic Acres has a chick in big red boots doing the farm chores, and Sports Day takes on a friendly orange rival in one event after another, from the sprint to the high dive, scoring one to three points for each event won and ending in a penalty shoot-out.

Monster Motel does room service for friendly monsters, a vampire, a mummy and a sleepy dragon among them. Sun's Out is one perfect, hectic day at the beach, and Late Again chases a sleepyhead from bed to the bus while the clock runs on from 7:00.

Controls on keyboard, mouse and touch

Every microgame plays with one finger on a phone or tablet and with the mouse on a computer, upright or sideways. The hand before each task shows the move: tap or click, hold and let go, drag, swipe, rub back and forth, draw a circle, trace a shape or tap as fast as you can. Nothing has to be learnt in advance, and the first rounds of every run start with the easiest tasks.

On a computer Space or Enter starts a run, P or Esc pauses and M mutes the sound, or use the button in the corner. There is nothing to buy, no account to make and nothing to download, and your best run stays in the browser you play in.

Frequently asked questions

Are the microgames on Kiloo free?

Yes. All ten microgames on Kiloo are free to play in your browser, with nothing to download or install, no account to make and nothing to buy. Your best run is saved in the browser on your device, so it is there the next time you play.

Can I play microgames on my phone or tablet?

Yes. Every microgame works on phones and tablets as well as on computers, upright or sideways. Each task needs one finger: tap, hold, drag, swipe, rub, circle or tap fast, as the little hand before the task shows. On a computer the mouse does the same, and the keyboard starts, pauses and mutes.

How long does a microgame last?

Each task lasts only a few seconds, with a fuse burning down along the top of the screen. A run goes on until you have missed three tasks, so it can last under a minute at first and much longer as you get better. The pace rises about every five rounds, up to roughly twice the speed you start at.

What happens when I miss a task?

The scene ends in a harmless cartoon mess, such as a spilt coffee, a sooty chef or a soaked parrot, and you lose one of your three lives. Win the boss round that comes every tenth round or so, and a lost life comes back, usually along with a new rank or title.

Which microgame should I start with?

Any of them, since every run begins with the easiest tasks. Oops Inc. has the most variety, with 24 office jobs, while the other nine have twelve tasks each in worlds from a pirate ship to the beach. If one task keeps catching you out, open the game's practice list and try it on its own.
