What makes a good dog game

A dog game is any game where a dog is the one you look after, train, groom or fly with. Most of the dog games on Kiloo are about care: filling the bowl, running a bath, brushing out knots and rubbing a tummy until the hearts come out. They are gentle and hands-on, and you do almost everything by dragging a tool or a toy onto the animal with a mouse or a finger.

The six games on this page come from three corners of the site. Four are from the pets category, where a puppy, a kennel garden, a clinic or a hotel is yours to run. One is a pet makeover from the fashion games, and one is a shooter in storybook skies with a dog in the pilot's seat. Several of them have no way to lose at all, and they keep your progress, stickers and earned items in the browser you play in.

Dog games to start with

Puppy Pal is the place to begin if you want a dog of your own. Pick a floppy, spotty, fluffy, sausage, curly or pointy-eared puppy, choose its coat and spell its name with letter tiles. Then feed it, bathe it, brush it, play fetch and tug, cuddle it and tuck it in under a blanket at bedtime. Its quick fetch, trick training and bubble mini-games have no way to lose. Dog Agility starts the same way, with six dogs to adopt and name and a kennel garden to keep them happy in, then takes you out to the field. Cue every jump, tunnel and weave in rhythm across thirty courses in five parks, and a missed cue just means a trot around, never a fall.

For a busier day with dogs and other animals, Vet Clinic lets you call puppies, kittens and other patients in from the waiting room, find the glowing spot with the stethoscope and send each one home with a sticker. There is no fail state and no countdown. Pet Hotel has dogs checking in alongside cats, rabbits, a parrot and a tortoise: give each guest the room it likes, fill the bowl, fling the ball and dim the lamp for a bedtime story. Pet Groomer puts a muddy dog, cat, rabbit, guinea pig or pony on the table to wash, blow-dry, snip along dotted guides and dress in bows and tiny boots for the photo booth.

Sky Ace is the odd one out. You fly Biscuit the pilot dog's red biplane through eight storybook skies, the pea-shooters fire on their own, and a loop-the-loop flips you over untouchable.

Playing with a mouse, a finger or the keys

The care games are made for dragging. With a mouse you drag the food bag, the brush or the blanket onto the dog and rub it to pet it; on a phone or tablet you do the same with a finger. Puppy Pal lets you flick the ball and swipe between rooms. The four pet games also work from the keyboard, with Tab or the arrow keys to move between things and Enter or Space to use them.

Dog Agility has its own controls on the field: Space or the arrows cue the obstacles, tap to jump, hold for the tunnel and press left and right for the weaves. On touch you tap the pad. In Sky Ace the arrows or WASD fly the plane, or it follows the mouse, Space loops and J or B drops a bomb. On a phone you drag anywhere and tap LOOP and BOMB with your right thumb. In every game P pauses and M mutes.
