Room service for friendly monsters, seconds at a time

Sports Day packs a whole stadium of events into a few seconds each: race the hundred metres, serve an ace, hit the long-jump board, tuck and spin off the high board and haul a barbell over your head. Every event you win scores one to three points for how well you did it, three missed events end the run, and every tenth event is the FINAL, a penalty shoot-out against your rival in goal.
Did you like Sports Day?
Sports Day is one big stadium and one very busy day. You are a round little athlete in blue, number 1, with a sweatband and huge trainers, and beside you at every event is a friendly orange rival, number 2. Between events a split-flap scoreboard clatters round to the next one's name, from 100 METRES and TENNIS to HIGH DIVE and CURLING, and a whistle sends you off.
Each event is one word and a few seconds. SPRINT! is tapping left, right, left, right to beat your rival to the tape, and the same side twice tangles your trainers. SERVE! is tapping at the very top of the toss: too early is into the net, too late is into the stands. LEAP! is a swipe up as your front foot hits the board, DIVE! is holding to tuck and spin and letting go to go in straight, and LIFT! is mashing the bar over your head and then keeping still while three lights come on. There is curling, golf, archery, swimming, bowling and the hammer too, each with its own move: rub, drag, tap, trace or circle. Misses are slapstick: a belly flop, a suction-cup arrow that boings back onto your own head.
A run is endless: the events keep coming until all three gold medals have rolled off their ribbons, one for every event you miss. Everything speeds up a little with each event, up to about twice the starting pace, with a FASTER! sign every five. Every tenth event is the FINAL: three penalties against your rival in goal, so wait for the glance and the lean and kick the other way. Score all three to move up a title, from Ball Fetcher and Water Carrier to Captain, Champion and Hall of Fame, and win a lost medal back. The SCOREBOARD shows the event you reached and your points, your best event is your high score and is saved in your browser, and the EVENTS list lets you practise any event you have already played.
Every event you win scores one to three points for how well you did it. The first three events come from SPRINT!, SERVE!, LEAP! and SWEEP!, and after that all eleven come round once before any repeats. SPRINT! and SWIM! are about rhythm: alternate sides evenly on the track, and in the pool tap just as the ring closes on the beat, since spot-on strokes count for more. SERVE! and LEAP! are a single press: the nearer the very top of the toss, or the nearer the red strip without touching it, the more points. In LIFT! stop mashing the moment the bar locks overhead, as every extra tap costs points and sets it wobbling. In DIVE! more turns score more, but let go in time for the slow turn to bring you in straight.
The FINAL every tenth event is three penalties in one go. Do not kick too soon: until the keeper glances and leans, they simply dive whichever way you kick. Wait for the glance, then swipe the other way straight away; quick kicks score more, and if you let one tell pass, another soon follows. Each event is a little quicker, with FASTER! every five, until the pace levels off at about twice the start around event 46.
Yes. Sports Day is free to play in your browser on Kiloo, with nothing to download, no account to make and nothing to buy. The orange rival is part of the game, not another person. Your best event and the events you have played are saved in the browser on this device.
Yes. Each event uses one finger, upright or sideways: tap, hold, drag, swipe, rub, trace, circle or mash, as the little hand shows before it starts. In SPRINT! you tap the left and right halves of the screen. On a computer the mouse does the same, Space or Enter starts a run and works like the mouse button, P or Esc pauses and M mutes.
You start with three gold medals, and every event you miss rolls one off its ribbon; when all three are gone the day is over. Score all three penalties in a FINAL to win a lost medal back. Finals also move you up a title: Water Carrier at event 10, then Sub, Starter, Captain and Champion every ten events, and Hall of Fame at 70.
The SCOREBOARD shows the event you reached, your best event, your points and your title. Points are one to three for each event you win, for how well you did it: a bigger lead in the sprint, a serve right at the top of the toss, a gentle putt that drops. Your high score is your best event, not your points, and it is saved in your browser.
Five seconds, one word, don't drop it.
