What are carnival games

Carnival games bring the stalls of a travelling funfair to your browser: the ring toss, the strongman tower, the duck pond and the camel race, under strings of warm bulbs and a striped awning. Each one is built on a single action you can learn in seconds, a throw, a tap on the beat or a dip of the hook, and then asks you to do it a little better on the next go. Rounds are short, so they fit easily into a spare few minutes.

Nine of the ten carnival games on Kiloo are games of skill. Tickets are only the score, nothing is bought or exchanged, and the stars you earn on each stall, round or act put plush toys on a prize shelf. Most have a set of levels with three stars each and a quick or endless mode for a high score. Nobody ever gets hurt: a bopped gopher only sees stars, and a performer who misses the net lands softly on the mattresses.

Carnival games to start with

Hook a Duck and High Striker are the gentlest start. In Hook a Duck you steer the hook over a looping stream and dip it through a rubber duck's ring, and its Relax mode has no clock at all. High Striker takes two taps a swing: stop the power meter at the top, then strike the sliding sweet spot to send the puck up to the bell. Gopher Bop is a quick 60-second reaction round in which you bop the gophers with a foam mallet and leave the bunnies with balloons alone.

Ring Toss, Camel Derby and Human Cannonball are played by dragging back and letting go. In Ring Toss you arc a ring at milk bottles on a tiered stand, in Camel Derby you roll balls up a wooden lane into holes that walk your tin camel along the race board against three rivals, and in Human Cannonball you launch a caped performer through streamer hoops and into the safety net.

Ferris Wheel Fill is a sorting puzzle with no clock: send coloured groups up to the gondola of their colour, with a new daily ride every day. Juggling Act is a rhythm game in which you tap left or right as balls, clubs and rings come down into the juggler's hands, and Candy Floss Stand has you run a sweet stall, spinning floss, filling popcorn and dipping toffee apples before the queue loses patience. Siesta Slots is a circus slot machine with cascading reels, four power-ups and five bonus games, played with free play coins only: nothing to buy and nothing to cash out.

Controls on keyboard, mouse and touch

Every carnival game works on a phone or tablet with one finger. You drag back and let go in Ring Toss, Camel Derby and Human Cannonball, tap anywhere for both taps in High Striker, tap the gophers in Gopher Bop and tap the left or right half of the screen in Juggling Act. In Hook a Duck you drag a finger to move the hook and let go to dip, in Ferris Wheel Fill you tap a queue or a group on the bench, and in Candy Floss Stand you circle the drum with your finger and hold the popcorn bag or the toffee pot.

On a computer the mouse does the same jobs, and the keys help too: holding Space sets the power in Ring Toss, Camel Derby and Human Cannonball, the number keys are laid out like a keypad in Gopher Bop, and A and D or the arrow keys catch for each hand in Juggling Act. In the nine skill games P pauses, R starts the level again and M mutes. Stars, prizes and best scores are kept in the browser you play in, so you can pick up where you left off.
