Quick jobs on a rolling pirate ship

Rocket Rookie sends a brand-new cadet through a run of tiny space missions, each told in one word and over in seconds: throw the launch lever, nudge a pod into its port, let go of an orbit at just the right moment. Miss one and an oxygen tank empties; empty all three and the run is over. Twelve quick missions, a pace that keeps rising and a rank that climbs from Cadet to Star Legend.
Did you like Rocket Rookie?
Rocket Rookie takes place at a space academy where nothing ever quite stops moving. You are its newest cadet, in a white suit and a fishbowl helmet, and every job on the ship lands on you. Between missions an airlock iris spirals shut, and when it opens there is a small sign for the part of the ship, one big word, a hand showing what to do and a few seconds on the fuse along the top. Get it right and the cadet beams. Get it wrong and things float off in their own direction: the rocket's nose pops off like a cork with the cadet on it, the pod bonks off the hull, a sneeze fogs up the helmet.
There are twelve missions. LAUNCH! wants the big lever thrown while the zero of the countdown is in the window. DOCK! has no brakes: tap beside the swim-ring pod to nudge it towards the port, and arrive gently. ORBIT! swings the cadet round a planet on a cord until you let go and fly through the ring. LAND! fires the thruster under a bucket to touch down softly on a tiny moon, BEAM! reels the class's lost socks back in with a tractor beam, SPIN! gets the gravity wheel turning so the floating crew lands on its rim, and SCRATCH! deals with an itch no mitten can reach. You swipe, tap, hold, drag, circle, rub and mash, and the first sectors start with the easiest missions.
A run is endless and lasts until all three oxygen tanks are empty, one for every mission you fail. The pace creeps up sector by sector, with a WARP! sign every five sectors, up to about twice the speed. Every tenth sector is the MOTHERSHIP: its big friendly captain plays a tune of lights, and you copy it on a floating console that drifts a little with every press. Get it right and you are PROMOTED!, from Cadet to Space Janitor, Co-Pilot and on to Star Legend, and an empty tank is refilled. The MISSION LOG shows the sector you reached, your best sector, the missions done and your rank. Your best sector is saved in your browser, and every mission you have met waits in the FLIGHT MANUAL to be practised on its own.
Rocket Rookie mixes one-shot missions with steady ones. LAUNCH! and ORBIT! are a single move each, so wait for the moment: swipe the lever any way while the zero sits in the window, and tap to let go when the cadet is heading straight for the ring. On LAND! hold in short bursts so the bucket comes down slowly; hold too long and the cadet floats off into space. DOCK! has no brakes: the pod drifts towards wherever you tap, so tap behind it to slow it down. BOOST!, SPIN! and SCRATCH! want rhythm: tap the jetpack steadily, keep circling the same way, and follow the cadet as each rub nudges them off.
The hand under the word shows the move. The first three sectors bring only LAUNCH!, BOOST!, FEED! and SCRATCH!. Then the pace creeps up every sector, with a WARP! sign every five, until it holds at about twice the start from sector 46. The fuse burns faster, but each BOOST! tap pushes harder at speed, so a steady thumb is enough. At the MOTHERSHIP watch the whole tune before you press, then tap each button where it is now, as the console drifts. The FLIGHT MANUAL lets you practise any mission you have met, COPY! included.
Yes. Rocket Rookie is free to play in your browser on Kiloo. There is nothing to download, no account to make and nothing to buy. Your best sector and the missions you have met are saved in the browser on this device, ready for your next run.
Yes, upright or sideways. Every mission is played with one finger: tap, tap fast, hold, drag, swipe, circle or rub, as the hand before each mission shows. On a computer the mouse does the same, Space or Enter presses LIFT OFF and BACK TO BASE, P or Esc pauses and M mutes.
Every tenth sector the captain plays a tune of lights for you to copy: four lights at first, five from sector 20, six from sector 40. A tap on an empty spot does nothing; a wrong button costs a tank. Get it right to refill an empty tank and, when the sector brings a new rank, be PROMOTED!, from Space Janitor at 10 to Star Legend at 100.
In DOCK! the pod drifts towards wherever you tap, and nothing slows it but another tap. Line it up with the port first, then let it float in gently, tapping behind it if it speeds up. Reach the wall too fast and it bonks off the hull, which costs a tank; a slow bump beside the port only sends it back for another try.
Five seconds, one word, don't drop it.
