Dune Racers

Dune Racers is a 3D kart racer set in the same sunny red-rock canyon as Tank Headz. You drive Red, the freckled heroine in sunglasses, with the gecko riding on her bonnet, against five rivals who each bring a kart with a personality of its own: Rosie the mechanic in her blue tow-kart, Kai the surfer with a surfboard for a rear wing, Nana in her pink roadster and flying goggles, Gizmo the robot on chrome and purple, and Flick the fox with a tail pennant on a whip antenna. Every race is three laps, and the results table shows everyone's position, time and best lap.

There are three circuits. Canyon Loop sweeps round banked bends, launches you off a timber jump, dives through a tunnel in a mesa and crosses a creek on a bridge. Scrap Yard Sprint is a figure of eight through the junkyard that crosses itself on a bridge, and Sunset Dam runs along the top of a dam with the reservoir glowing in the evening light. Hold drift through a bend and sparks change from blue to orange to purple: let go for a boost. Speed pads fling you forward, coins on the racing line raise your top speed a little, and item boxes hold a speed boost, a bubble shield, a banana peel that spins a kart round, a magnet that pulls in coins and a horn that makes nearby karts wobble.

Grand Prix runs all three circuits for points, a single Race picks one, and Time Trial puts you alone on the circuit against a ghost of your best lap. Coins, drift boosts, overtakes, jumps and your finishing place all add to the score, so every quick race is a go at the high score. Steer with the arrow keys or WASD, hold Space to drift and press Shift to use an item. On a phone or tablet the steering buttons sit bottom left and accelerate, drift and item bottom right, and Auto takes care of the accelerator for you. Your best scores, lap records and ghosts are saved in your browser. P pauses, M mutes.
